Values and examples on how to calculate PIP

What is a Pip?

A pip (percentage in point) is a standardized unit of measurement representing the smallest standard price change in a currency pair exchange rate. It is used to calculate price movements within the Forex market.

For the majority of currency pairs, one pip corresponds to a price movement of 0.0001.

Examples:

  • EUR/USD: A movement from 1.4000 to 1.4001 = 1 pip
  • GBP/USD: A movement from 1.2500 to 1.2501 = 1 pip

For currency pairs where the Japanese Yen (JPY) is the quote currency, one pip typically represents a movement of 0.01.

Example:

  • USD/JPY: A movement from 80.00 to 80.01 = 1 pip

Modern execution platforms may also display fractional pips (pipettes). For instance, a price movement in EUR/USD from 1.40000 to 1.40001 represents 0.1 pips (1 pipette).

Pip Value Calculation

The monetary value of a pip depends on the position size, the specific currency pair, and the base currency of the trading account.

For currency pairs where 1 pip equals 0.0001, the baseline formula is:

$$\text{Pip Value} = \text{Position Size} \times \text{Pip Size}$$

EUR/USD Examples:

  • Standard Lot (100,000 EUR): $100,000 \times 0.0001 = \mathbf{\$10.00\text{ USD}}$
  • Mini Lot (10,000 EUR): $10,000 \times 0.0001 = \mathbf{\$1.00\text{ USD}}$
  • Micro Lot (1,000 EUR): $1,000 \times 0.0001 = \mathbf{\$0.10\text{ USD}}$

Actual monetary outcomes depend on instrument parameters and prevailing market rates.

JPY Pair Calculation Example

For JPY currency pairs, 1 pip equals 0.01.

Assume:

  • Position Size: $100,000\text{ USD}$
  • USD/JPY Exchange Rate: $80.00$
  • 1 Pip: $0.01\text{ JPY}$
  1. Pip value in quote currency (JPY):
    $$100,000 \times 0.01 = 1,000\text{ JPY}$$
  2. Conversion to account currency (USD):
    $$1,000\text{ JPY} \div 80.00 = \mathbf{\$12.50\text{ USD}}$$

Thus, under these parameters, a 1-pip movement in USD/JPY represents approximately $12.50 USD for a 100,000 USD nominal position.

Key Drivers of Pip Valuation

Pip value is primarily determined by:

  • Nominal trade volume (position size)
  • Currency pair specifications
  • Current market exchange rates
  • Account base currency

Where the account currency differs from the quote currency, conversion charges or prevailing spot rates apply. Execution platforms automatically calculate pip values and position parameters in real time.
